Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the main benefits of using EkloGrow® Ecklonia Kelp Plant Stimulant?

EkloGrow® repays your investment many, many times over by increasing crop yield and quality. It does so by:

  1. Enlarging root systems.
  2. Strengthening plant stalks, reducing lodging risks.
  3. Increasing drought resistance.
  4. Increasing resistance to nematode infestations.
  5. Improving fertilizer assimilation.
  6. Stimulating flowering.
  7. Increasing crop yield.

2. Why is Cambrian Biotech’s A-Hoy® Fish Fertilizer better than those coming from waste materials of the fish industry?

As with all industries, one finds raw fish materials representing a wide range of qualities and therefore, so do the end products manufactured from these. Therefore, the source and quality of the fish as used in fish emulsion fertilizers is most important to the end product’s quality.

Is it made from fresh water fish or marine fish?
The nutrient quality as found in marine based fish would be far superior to fresh water fish as the contents of the fish emulsion would reflect its environment. We know that seawater is much more nutritious that fresh water.

Is it made with the whole fish or cut off scrap fish? What species fish? How is it processed?
All these questions apply when considering quality of product.

Cambrian Biotech’s A-Hoy® Anchovy Fish fertilizer is made with whole Anchovy fish and not made from fish meal and not chemically amended. A detailed description of our manufacturing process is posted elsewhere on Cambrian’s web site.

3. Which crops are most responsive to EkloGrow®?

Potato trails in the UK have recorded additional profits of between £170-£220/ha (£79-£89) despite there being no visible difference in the crop prior to lifting. Such responses come from yield improvements of over 2.5tons/ha (1ton/acre). Root crops such as sugar beet directly benefit from enlarged root systems.

Cereals also react very well to EkloGrow®. One of numerous field trials around the globe on cereals was done at Badlingham Farm, Cambridgeshire. Untreated yields represented 100% while the EkloGrow® fields yielded 127%

Research on a grass / clover in South Africa recorded fresh and dry weight increases of 16% and 25% respectively.

Tomatoes are also one of the top responders as are cucurbits and melons.

Trials by Mongo Horticulture using EkloGrow® on Lancashire glass house crops increased the weight of lettuces bye 30%. In some situations such a response will mean difference between acceptable supermarket produce and crop that is commercially unsalable.

EkloGrow® positive effect on a wide variety of yields has been well documented during the past 20 years. Yield improvements are normally dependant on the number of EkloGrow® applications as well as climatic conditions. Under optimal growing conditions yields are normally improved by approximately 10%.   However, under stress conditions, control plot plants, with weaker root systems, are affected more severely and their yields are set back to a much greater extent than those treated with EkloGrow® potentially resulting in yield increases of 20+%

4. Why is it better to buy KelPlus® Anchovy Fish fertilizer and Ecklonia Kelp stimulant blend than to mix seaweed and fish products together on the farm?

Accuracy, quality and ease of use.

KelPlus® has been tweaked and fine tuned during the first 3 years after its introduction.

A special ratio of quality marine fish & kelp materials is micro blended into a single concentrated liquid, allowing these two components to function synergistically. The result of KelPlus® clearly outperforms the sum of its components.

5. How and when should Cambrian Biotech’s liquid concentrates be used for maximum effect?

Best results are obtained by using our liquid concentrates during the early stages of growth. These products are applied either as soil drenches, foliar sprays or a combination thereof.

Foliar sprays are most commonly used, the product being absorbed through crop leaves. The usual treatment is two applications at 1 Qt/acre at an early stage of growth; when sufficient leaf surface area has developed.

EkloGrow® soil drenches are used for vegetables and crops such as tomatoes and directly after seedling transplanting.    Fruit trees also benefit from soil drench applications by using 1:200 dilutions and applying 1 pint to young, small tree seedlings up to 2 gallons for larger trees – starting at transplant and every 6 to 8 weeks thereafter during the growing season. Tree growth and health is significantly increased.

6. Can EkloGrow® replace nutritional programs?

No. EkloGrow® is not a fertilizer and should be viewed as a catalyst in the plant’s growing processes. It can, however, reduce fertilizer dependency  to some degree. EkloGrow® leads to significantly larger root systems which, in turn, increases soil nutrient and moisture utilization. Although EkloGrow® does contain many important trace elements, these are present in low quantities; the true benefit of this product is contained in the auxin-like and cytokinin-like hormones sourced from Ecklonia maxima.

7. What does EkloGrow® do?

The main effect of using EkloGrow® is the resulting larger root system which leads to improved utilization of soil nutrients and moisture. It also increases the size of the vascular cells in plant stems which are responsible for transferring nutrients and water from roots to leaves,  and sugars and other plant synthesized nutrients from the leaves to other plant parts.

8. What is the average shelf life of Cambrian products?

Cambrian products are shipped around the world and have proven to be shelf stable for at least 2 years. The general rule is immediately replace closures and lids after use and store product in coolest available surroundings.

9. What does EkloGrow® contain?

EkloGrow® contains small amounts of macro and micro-nutrients , including phosphorus ,potassium, nitrogen sulphur, calcium, sodium, magnesium, iron and manganese; various amino acids ; vitamins B1 B2 C and E ; but most importantly cytokinin- and auxin-like plant growth stimulants.

10. Can all Cambrian Biotech’s products be certified organic?

Yes, all Cambrian Biotech’s products are natural and environmentally sound.

A number of organic certifying organizations have sprung up during recent years, many with differing requirements and widely fluctuating labeling registration fees.

Cambrian Biotech takes its lead from the USDA Organic Classification system. Since October 21, 2002, guidelines were established by the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Organic Program (NOP) to assure consumers know the exact organic content of the products they buy.
